This film talks about the discovery of radiolarians, which before I took this class, I had no idea they even existed. Radiolarians are these intricately shaped microorganisms that have their own unique skeletal structures. After watching this film, I believe that the most interesting part of Haeckel’s life is when he decides that after many years working as a scientist, he wanted to change course a little and become an artist that would use science as his inspiration. In my life, I have never really thought about the relationship between art and science, but at the same time I also did not think that they could not be connected. One thing this film taught me about the relationship between science and art is that when you break things down in science to their smallest piece you can see how those small pieces create a bigger “artwork”. The most interesting part of this film to me was the fact that Haeckel’s discovery of these microorganisms called radiolarians helped foster both his love for science and art. Not only was he able to make an entirely new scientific discovery, but he was also able to find inspiration for artistic ideas.
