Setting up a Peg Armature and Roughing in your Self-Portrait Bust

Cut one of the provided plastic bags in half.

Save the side with only one opening for later.

Wrap the part of the plastic bag with two openings over the wooden peg, securing it with the wire.

Don’t wrap it too tightly. You should be able to move the plastic up and down freely.

Set up your visual references. Get out calipers, a wooden paddle, and a cutting wire.

Compact the clay around the plastic covered wooden peg.

Use a wooden paddle to help compact the clay.

Use calipers and a mirror to get a general sense of how big your head is.

Compare the proportions of your head to your clay model.

Build up your clay model to the general shape and size of your head.

Looking closely at your visual references and continually rotating your sculpture, begin roughing in the features of your bust.

Tip Toland Workshop — Sculpting a Clay Head

In a typical semester, students enrolled in Drawing 1 and Sculpture 1 attend art events on campus in person to satisfy the artsxpose requirements. Because of COVID restrictions, most art events are canceled. In light of the limited options this semester students may satisfy an artsxpose requirement by watching an episode of Art21 and posting a written response. Instructions are below:

<1> Go to the Art 21 website (http://www.pbs.org/show/art-21/episodes/) and watch one hour-long episode. Choose the episode you find most interesting.

<2> After you’ve watched the episode, submit a thoughtful ~ 200-word response to the class website in the “artsxpose” category. Describe what was covered in the episode and tell what you found interesting, surprising, and/or challenging about it.

Students should satisfy two artsxpose requirements in the first half of the semester, and two in the second half. Watching one episode and submitting the written response counts for one artsxpose.
