Esme’s Artxpose 4

Title of Event: Friends and Stranger

Date & Time of Event: Tuesday, December 10, 1:30 pm
Location of Event: PBS ART21
Type of event: Episode

The four different artists shown in this video, all use different art to elaborate on part of their identity. Through their work they all want to gain intimacy to people. The four different artists had very different mediums, yet they all used their art to connect to a population and broaden others view as well as their own. Another part that I find quite interesting that a couple of the artists touched on is letting people misunderstand. There is a power in leaving your art up to interpretation that makes it that much more powerful instead of explaining ur reasons for creating it, you let ur work have more effect and meaning for more people because it can take so many more meanings without a label. Art is a process instead of a creation, that gives meaning to work. At is the life that you live. What I find amazing is that what all of these artists had in common, was that they had a vision and they followed through on it, it didn’t have to be this elaborate art form or idea they just used energy and excitement to create it for everyone to relate to. Art lets you bypass today and lets you think about what it means in the future, lets you belong to a place and scale visibility to social norms, being able to collaborate with others even if you make the art alone.

Date & Time of Event: December 2 at 3pm

Location of Event: The Samek Museum

Type of event: Exhibition

I love the aesthetic of this exhibit. I discovered that this exhibit was a gift from a Bucknell alum, art ranging from a variety of artists. This took over 50 years for him to cultivate this and I believe he has done a great job executing this. While walking around the room, I noticed there were paper receipts hung up from him purchasing the different art pieces. I like this sort of element, as it shows a more behind the scene look into the process of purchasing art. I enjoy the diverse pieces: screen prints, paintings, drawings and so much more. I thought it was very well thought out the way the collection was presented in the Samek.

Title of Event:  The Gleaners by Maggie Cardelús

Date & Time of Event: Dec 9th at 12pm

Location of Event: Holmes 103

Type of event: Artist opening/reception

For my third artsXpose I chose to visit Maggie Cardelús’s needlepoint exhibition. After listening to her speak earlier this semester, it’s nice to see her artwork she’s been working on while staying here. I thought it was interesting that the needlepoint art pieces were quite similar, but varied by size, color and technique. I love that you can see her experimentation through her art pieces and all the dedication she puts into it as well.

Title of Event: Fall Dance Concert
Date & Time of Event: Friday, December 6th, 7:30 pm
Location of Event: Harvey M Powers Theatre: Coleman
Type of event: Dance Performance

I am so glad I went to this Fall Dance Concert – the dancers, choreographers, and stage design were so creative and I was truly inspired by their work. Two performances really stood out to me – the first one dancers laid their backs on the ground a projector reflected with movements on a screen. You could see the dancers lying on the ground but also what they looked like from a bird’s eye view – it was fascinating. During the middle of the performance, another screen came down and the performers played with light and shadow as some were in front of the screen and some were behind. The second dance, which is photographed very blurry below, was inspired by Degas ballerina paintings. There was a clear tension between beauty and strength displayed through the outfits, the gestures, and the music. I liked that the choreographer referenced another type of visual art through her use of Degas.

Title of Event: Kress Collection
Date & Time of Event: Sunday December 9th 1 pm
Location of Event: Samek Art Gallery
Type of event: Art Exhibition

I thought that the exhibition was very well displayed. I particularly like a white stone sculpture of a mother and child because I thought that it was very well detailed. Especially working with a hard material like metal I think that it is very impressive that the artist could work such detail into a material like stone and make it look flawless. In addition, I thought that the environment of the room made the art work feel very grandiose.

Title of Event:  art opening/reception for Maggie Cardelús
Date & Time of Event: Thurs Nov 14 5pm
Location of Event: Holmes rm 103
Type of event: Artist opening/reception

I really enjoyed Maggie’s work. I found that all of the mixed media was very visually interesting and appealing. I like how she uses other unfinished works and turns them into her version of a finished work. I also think that the repetition of the themes and images in a lot of her works are interesting because it gives me different versions/ perspectives of one specific topic. I also loved how colorful her work was as it is very eye catching.

Title of Event: Kress Collection

December 8, 1pm

Location: 3rd floor of ELC

Type of Event: Walkthrough

For my final arts xpose I visited the Kress Collection in the ELC. This collection contains lots of work from hundreds of years ago. It was fascinating to see how much detail that was able to be put into all of the artwork given the lack of resources then compared to now. Specifically, the perfection displayed by the sculpture in the second picture. To create such a detailed sculpture in such a difficult material amazes me.

Title of Event: Driftpoints: The Gleaners by Maggie Cardelús

Date and Time of event: November 15 at 4pm

Location of Event: Holmes Hall

Type of Event: Exhibition

For my third arts xpose I attended Maggie Cardelús’ needlepoint exhibition. After learning about her work during her lecture, it was interesting to be able to see it in person. Seeing pictures of her work during her presentation did not give her work the credit it deserves. There is a serious amount of effort that goes into making one of these and it is really cool to see all the different ways she approaches these pieces.

Title of Event: The Kress Collection
Date & Time of Event: Monday, December 9th, 2:16 pm
Location of Event: The Samek Museum
Type of event: Exhibition

This exhibition is medieval and renaissance are from the Kress Foundation. This exhibition highlights the realism that was very prominent in this time period. These pieces are in good condition still and highlight the exceptional attention to detail and proficiency of the artists. The frames are greatly adorned, and there is a prominence of gold in the works and on the frames. This exhibition shows a time of great flourishing culture, because they were able to have an artisan class, there had to be economic stability and peace. This room really highlights the accomplishments of this time through the artwork, that hen I walk into the room I immediately got so much admiration and pride of the excellence of the artists work and the glory of this time period.

Title of Event: Slow Looking
Date & Time of Event: Wednesday, December 4th, 1:15 pm
Location of Event: The Samek Museum
Type of event: Exhibition

This Exhibition was curated very thoughtfully and well. It was created so that viewers would be forced to take time to observe the art, not just what meets the eye, you have to immerse yourself in the art to reveal new discovery and insights. When you first walk into the exhibit it is quite overwhelming. You are met with tons of work, grouped together in sections with no obvious correlation to each other. There are a handful of loud soundtracks, each one playing a seemingly random array of juxtaposing noises. Once I sat staring at each work individually, and then together, it started to make sense. The sound helped to make the space feel more chaotic, but it made sense. I was able to find peace in the chaos, every thing I saw and heard started to change my perspective. Nothing there was random. Each noise made the others have more clarity. The vibrant colors of one piece, brought out the more subdued colors of the neighboring piece of art. Each detail became more noticeable, and suddenly my brain was able to see a theme. When you take the time to look at something you are able to feel. In a world that has become so caught up in the “fast culture” and “consumerism”, you miss out on meaningful relationships and experiences. This exhibition was a refreshing break to be able to see something exist without assumptions or labels, or without one thing being isolated from the surroundings and yet in a sterile environment as a gallery. Everything exists in the context.

Title of Event: Driftpoints: The Gleaners by Maggie Cardelùs
Date & Time of Event: Thursday, November 14th, 5:15 pm
Location of Event: The Holmes Gallery
Type of event: Exhibition

I really enjoyed this exhibition, as I love how Maggie Cardelùs combined different traditions to show a new perspective, by using needlepoint to reinvent a famous traditional painting by Jean François de Millet. I feel that she demonstrates evolving historical perspectives and ongoing transformation of women very well by using an art form that is often made with the labor of anonymous women. She also demonstrates different perspectives by adapting this image many different times with different needlepoint techniques. What I found most interesting was that in her installation she included hanging a bag of the yarn used in the needle point, she is able to leave a physical trail of the history of her work. Cardelùs is able to make a technique identified usually with a “craft” and make it into traditional art to prove the flexibility of materials and humans to change.

Title of Event: Kress Collection

December 6, 12pm

Location: 3rd floor of ELC

For my fourth Art Xpose I got to see the displayed artwork at the Kress collection. This was a very interesting room in the Samek Museum filled with pieces of artwork, all created very long ago. I was amazed by how well the paintings held up, I only notices one with little cracks in the paint. The sculptures also held up very well, which made me wonder how they stayed that well intact. All of the pieces seemed like they were very old works of art, and the picture frames exemplified this. I really enjoyed this exhibit and was amazed by the dates of these pieces.

Samek Museum

I visited the Samek Museum on the third floor of the ELC and went to The Kress Collection. I did not know what to expect and when walking into this part of the room I was really surprised by how amazing the pieces in there were. All of the pieces had a similar presence of being very old. Even the frames were very old and very detailed. When I think of modern art frames I think of slick and simple frames so I think of the detail these frames added to the art inside. I think the setup of the room makes it very appealing, how the falls are dark red with the spotlights over the pieces of art. The descriptions on the side of the art all had very old dates and I could easily tell that the art was set in that time period. In one of the pictures I took my mind quickly went to religion. The way it is shaped, the people all have halos around them, and the two girls with the angel wings all made me think of religion. Overall I enjoyed this section of the museum and how there is not an overwhelming amount of art pieces so I could really appreciate each one.

This exhibition is very interesting. It is a collection of Renaissance and Medieval artwork from the Kress Foundation. I found all of the art to be fascinating. I was especially interested in the sculptures. It is really impressive how sculptures from this time period were so detailed and able to capture small details like movement and wrinkles in clothing.

Title of Event: Driftpoints: The Gleaners by Maggie Cardelús

Date and Time of event: December 3 at 2pm

Location of Event: Holmes Hall

Type of Event: Exhibition

I thought this exhibit was very interesting. The artwork seemed to have a lot of repetition, with each being a variation of the same/ similar piece. What set them apart was color, size, and possibly material. I liked that they were made of various woven materials, which made them 3D. This added an interesting element to the art. Although I didn’t make it to the opening event It was obvious these pieces were very meticulously made and with great attention to detail.

November 14th- 5-6PM, Holmes Hall

I went to see Maggie Cardelús’s art exhibit and it was really interesting to see her artwork in person because I had previously gone to her talk in October where she was explaining all the different kinds of art she does. The photo that I took was of her work with the small plastic pieces. I really like how much detail the piece has. I also really liked looking at her needlepoint pieces and thought they where very impressive. I like how Maggie has used such different materials throughout her career like all of her pieces made out of paper.

Title of Event: Driftpoints: The Gleaners by Maggie Cardelús

Date and Time of event: November 14 at 5pm

Location of Event: Holmes Hall

Type of Event: Exhibition

For my third ArtXpose I went to Maggie Cardelús needlepoint artwork exhibition in Holmes Hall. Her needlepoint was very detailed and an amazing representation of hard work. The needlepoint works were all very similar, depicting women working in a field. Each piece of art had almost an identical scene, but the coloration, mesh count, artistic interpretation, and size varied. They were very intricate and I learned that Maggie Cardelús experimented with a variety of hands-on approaches to make each one. In her work, she shifts this medium of work from decorative to critical. I really enjoyed seeing Cardelús’ artwork and learning about her process.

Date & Time of Event: Tuesday, November 19th 7 – 8:30 pm
Location of Event: Holmes 3rd Floor Drawing Studio
Type of event: Live Figure Drawing Session Club Event

The Art Collective club at Bucknell hosts figure drawing sessions which are open to the campus in Holmes with a nude model. For the privacy of the model the photos did not include them, and my sketches were somewhat covered. Everyone at the session was very encouraging with each other and we shared our sketches and comments at the end, the model was very happy with them and even took home some to keep.

Date & Time of Event: Thursday, November 14th, 1:15 pm
Location of Event: Holmes Gallery
Type of event: Exhibition

This was such an incredible exhibition in Holmes Hall! One rarely sees needlepoint or stitch highlighted in the Fine Arts so it was special to see a feminine medium and artist supported by Bucknell. What drew my attention was that each of the needle points depicted almost the same scene but with different stitches, sizes, color palettes, and interpretations. She reinterprets an iconic scene by Jean-Francois Millet the Gleaners. The painting depicts 3 peasant women doing backbreaking farm work – responsibilities that often go overlooked and underpraised. Choosing this specific subject matter and recreating it into needlepoint creates an interesting dialogue between materiality, identity, and womanhood. It is also incredible how much detail she was able to get into the needlepoint to replicate the painting – I can only imagine how difficult it is to translate from one medium to the other.
